March 22, 2007
Dr. Lucente traveled to South Africa in March. Visiting the cities of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Pietermartzburg and Cape Town, he instructed over 100 surgeons in TVT Secure for stress incontinence and PROLIFT for pelvic organ prolapse.
Stress urinary incontinence is a condition that affects more than 19 million women in the United States alone. Half of all women over age 50 experience some degree of pelvic organ prolapse. Twenty percent of women over 60 years of age will require surgical intervention. Women in South Africa suffer from these conditions at about the same incidence rates.
In a combination of lectures and hands on surgical demonstration, Dr. Lucente was able to make a significant contribution to this country sharing his surgical knowledge vast experiences.
The county also made a significant impact on Dr. Lucente, an avid outdoorsman. Awed by it’s rugged beauty and friendly people, he has vowed to return in the near future.
